Theatre Groups
Students from all the Departments participate in the Ionian University theatre groups. These groups offer the students opportunities for alternative cultural activities and personal expression and promote their communication with the Corfiot public.
The
Ionian University Independent Theatre Group “Professionals - Amateurs” (former “Theatre of the Absurd”) was established during the academic year 2003-2004. In 2004 Pavlos Matesis’ play "Teleti" ("Ceremony") was presented at the Ionian Academy. Federico García Lorca’s "Blood Wedding" was staged in 2005 at the Stablus Hall, in the area of the New Fortress.

The
Ionian University Theatre Club was established in 1995 and has since had a dynamic presence in the University and Corfu in general. In the last few years, the Club has been operating independently under the name «Ionian University Independent Theatrical Club» (I.U.I.T.C.). Its members come mainly, but not exclusively, from the University’s academic community. Since 2006 the I.U.I.T.C. is a member of the Panhellenic Student Theatre Groups Association, sharing the obligations and privileges deriving from the Association’s regulations.
The group has no support from drama professionals. Amateurs, with little experience but great love for the theatre, direct and play the parts. The group’s main goal is to introduce its members to the basic principles of the dramatic art, through role-playing, practice and improvisation. At the end of every academic year a play is staged in collaboration with the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Corfu. Rehearsals usually take place at the Ionian Academy Hall of Ceremonies. The group aims at presenting modern, original and unconventional plays, free from clichés and classical norms. All the members of the group have a say on the choice of plays to be staged, so that they can all express their inner artistic self and creativity. .
The target is to entertain the audience but also touch controversial issues and provide food for thought. It should be noted that the I.U.I.T.C. is not based on any kind of hierarchy but it operates as a company of friends.
Any member of the academic community of the Ionian University is welcome to join the theatre club. Prior experience is not considered a prerequisite but a strong interest in the theatre and the acceptance of the group’s principles are.
