Social Program - Excursions
The following is a list of optional daily tours for the participants of ECDL 2009 Conference and their accompanying persons. To register please download this form (Word document, appr. 700kb) Grand Island Bus Tour We continue passing through Nissaki, Ipsos and Dassia, to the Venetian –and English influenced Corfu town. After a short exploration of the town, we head for Kanoni, from where we enjoy the famous view of the mouse island, Corfu’s landmark and the Vlacherna convent. The tour resumes with a visit of the Achilion Palace, built by the Empress Elisabeth of Australia. Visit of the museum dedicated to her from the Kaiser Willheim II and view of the gardens and statues. From there, we go to Paleokastritsa, the most popular and picturesque area of the island. Visit of the 13th century Greek Orthodox Monastery (there will be plenty of time for lunch, swimming or boat trips). Then, we go to Bella Vista, described by Lawrence Durell as having the most beautiful view in the whole Mediterranean. Travel through Troumpeta Pass, to enjoy a spectacular view of the North and Central parts of the island. Daily tours: Wednesday (30/9), Sunday (27/9 & 4/10) Price: Adults: euros 40.00 per person Price includes transfers from & to hotel Full day bus tour: Paleopolis, Paleocastritsa, Bella vista and the north eastern part of the island Leave Kanoni and drive along the road of Paleopolis and guiding tour of Paleopolis from the bus. We continue our drive to visit the town of Corfu, Kerkyra or Coryfo in Greek. Only by strolling around the narrow streets [kantounia] one will actually appreciate the unique flavour of the town. It’s main monuments of English, French and Venetian influence are beautiful to the eye. Continue driving through picturesque villages and serene olive groves, reaching Kassiopi village at the north eastern tip of the island. The ruins of a medieval castle can be seen above the pretty little fishermen’s port. Driving along the eastern coast southward now, we pass along the pretty little port of Kouloura and stop for lunch in one of the beaches on our way to town. This tour will take place the following days: Price: Adults: euros 40.00 per person Paxos Island – Parga (Cruise) Departing from the harbor of Corfu, we have a unique view of the old town, situated among the two Venetian fortresses. Sailing towards the south of Corfu we see the Kanoni peninsula and the palace of Mon Repos where Prince Phillip was born. As we approach the channel between Corfu and Paxos we see in front of us the green island of Paxos covered mostly with olive a Cyprus trees. Entering the narrow channel which leads us to the picturesque small port of Gaios village, we see a breathtaking view of the two islands Panagia and Agios Nikolaos. From the harbor close to the center of Gatos village you can easily walk through the lovely narrow streets and enjoy the local color. Then we sail towards the Greek mainland and the town of Parga where you will have the opportunity to swim or visit the town and the fortress, which lies on a small peninsula not far from the port. As we return to Corfu, we sail close to the mainland enjoying another spectacular view of the impressive rocky coast and the sandy beaches. Daily tours: Wednesday (30/9), Saturday (26/9 & 3/10) & Sunday (27/9 & 4/10) Price: Adults: euros 40.00 per person The boat remains 2 hours at Paxos and 2 hours at Parga (approx.) Needed items Passport or identity card, photo and/or video camera, glasses, hat, comfortable shoes, and a small bottle of water, especially for the visits to archaeological monuments. Also, you can have your swim suit, towel and sun-protection lotion, if you wish to swim. |
