The island of Corfu, the largest of the Ionian Islands, is located in the northern Ionian Sea, at the entrance to the Adriatic, off the west coast of Albania and the Greek mainland. Corfu covers an area of 592 km2. The climate is mild without being bitterly cold in winter and summers are humid. Corfu, known to the ancient Greeks as Korkura, was named after Assopos river's daughter, the nymph Corkira. Possidon fell in love with Corkira and kidnapped her, taking her to Corfu island.

The conference will take place in Corfu Holiday Palace, one of the well-known 4-Star hotels that is situated a few kilometers from the center of the Corfu city. Corfu Holiday Palace provides rooms of variant capacity that are going to host plenary sessions, as well assisting rooms and halls, which are going to host workshops, tutorials and parallel sessions. Moreover, in agreement with the Organizing Committee Corfu Holiday Palace can accommodate the participants in a special price and an excellent service.

Frequent flights of the major Greek aviation companies from Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" and the "Macedonia" airport of Thessaloniki bridge the island with the major towns in Greece.
Olympic Airlines - the major aviation company in Greece - offers a discount of 15% to tickets of the Economy Class. The discount is valid for trips in between September 27 and October 04, 2009. This discount is valid also only for flights of the Olympic Airways, which are operated by Olympic Airways airplanes.
ECDL participants may address to Olympic Airways offices and by referring to the code ZZCONF01/09ZZ will receive the discount. It is important to present the mail of confirming their registration to the conference to the office in order to activate this discount.
Numerous ferries of ANEK Lines connect daily Corfy with Greek mainland ports of Igoumenitsa (average trip duration 1,5 hours) and Patras (average trip duration 6-7 hours). Additionally, Corfy has a very regular connection (daily in summer time) with Italy (Brindisi, Bari, Venice) and Albania.
ANEK Lines provides a 40% discount to the tickets of the passengers' choice (subjected to availability) in the domestic (from Patras and Igoumenitsa) and international (from Venezia and Ancona) routes. Corfu is connected with regular bus itineraries with Athens and Thessaloniki (via Igoumenitsa and ferry), throughout the year.
ECDL 2009 provides laptops or PCs (windows XP with Microsoft Office software) and video or data projectors in all the conference and workshop rooms. Overhead projectors (OHP) and flipcharts may be available upon request. Speakers are advised to contact the corresponding session chair before the beginning of their session.
Sixteen (16) poster boards will be available throughout Wednesday, September 30, in the poster session area. Poster Boards dimensions: 190x120 cm. Presenters are encouraged to put their poster up well before the beginning of the session.

Lunch will be served at the Restaurant of Corfu Holiday Palace Hotel, according to the schedule. Participants will be given a lunch-ticket for each day and they have to hand it to the restaurant's cashier, in exchange for their lunch. There will be a limited number of additional tickets for sale at the price of 25 Euros each (children less than 12 years pay half price). The tickets can be bought at the conference secretariat.
The conference reception, includes a buffet dinner and will be served at the restaurant of Corfu Holiday Palace Hotel on Monday, September 28th at 20:00. Each participant will be given a reception ticket, which must be given to the restaurant's cashier, in exchange for dinner. There will be a limited number of additional tickets for sale at the price of 30 Euros each (children less than 12 years pay half price). The tickets can be bought at the conference secretariat.
Greece as most other E.U. countries uses Euro as its currency. Other currencies are not widely accepted, but they can be exchanged at exchanges and Banks. Corfu being a holiday destination enjoys long opening hours for shops, especially in the summer months. Shops open between 09:00 and 09:30 in the morning and stay open up to 22:00 with an afternoon break usually from 14:30 to 17:00.
Greece uses standard 230 V European sockets, which makes adaptors for delegates traveling with U.K. and U.S. electrical appliances a necessity.
Bus line No 2 "Mantouki-Kanoni" connects Corfu Holiday Palace with the Corfu city centre, every half hour. The bus stops are close to the hotels that host most of the ECDL 2009 participants. Please ask at your hotel receptions for information about the bus stops and the timetable.
The conference dinner will be held on Tuesday, September 29th at 20:00. It will be held in the Achillion Palace Gardens, which is located at Gastouri, a village set amid beautiful scenery on a green hillside, 10 kilometers from the conference place. It was built for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the renowned Sissy, in 1890-91 by the Italian architect Kapita. The Empress had a soft spot for the Homeric hero Achilles, and so named her palace after him. The neoclassical building is set amid magnificent gardens. The back part of the garden is dominated by the statue of "Achilles Dying", a creation of the German sculptor Herter. The participants will depart from Corfu Holiday Palace Hotel by buses at 18:00 and will return around 23.00. Each participant has been given a ticket, which will be collected by the members of the Organizing Committee. There is a limited number of additional tickets for sale at the price of 37 Euros each. The tickets can be bought at the conference secretariat by Tuesday, 29th noontime.
