Workshop Info:
The workshop will focus on the experiences of the EuropeanaLocal project partners in collecting metadata from small and unfederated cultural heritage repositories in 27 countries across Europe. The project’s remit is to work with local and regional cultural heritage institutions, in the libraries, museums, archives and galleries domains, so as to help them make the enormous amount of content that they hold available through Europeana (the European Digital Library).
It will address some of the issues and challenges they will face relating to metadata transformation and harvesting in a cross domain environment, as revealed by the responses to preparatory surveys carried out by the project.
The topics of the workshop will include extraction and normalization of metadata as well as population of repositories. It will therefore touch on topics relating to interoperability such as the adoption and use of standards and metadata schemas, multiple and overlapping authority files, and problems of language and multiple character sets.
The workshop will therefore provide an important contribution to ecdl2009 in the following areas:
Conceptual Views of Digital Libraries; Metadata Schemas; Interoperability & Data Integration; Multilingual Information Retrieval and Multimedia Information Retrieval all of which are important research areas for the digital library community.
