Since 2006, the Department of Audio & Visual Arts has been collaborating with Ionian Islands Periphery, the Development Enterprise of Corfu Municipality and other Departments of the Ionian University in the research subproject: “Interactive Environment of the New Fort of Corfu.” The aim of this project is the development of a multimedia platform at the new Venetian Fort of Corfu for the promotion of the history, culture and arts of Corfu.

Since the beginning of its operation, the Department pursues bilateral collaborations with corresponding European and American educational institutions, especially in the context of the ERASMUS programme.

“SOCRATES” is an action programme of the European Union for intergovernmental collaboration in the educational field. It was approved on March 14,1995, and its first phase covered the period up to 2000. The programme’s second phase, the so-called “SOCRATES II,” was enacted, following a European Parliament and Council of Europe’s decision, on January 24, 2000. “SOCRATES II” puts emphasis on lifelong learning as a means of reinforcing citizens’ active participation and of boosting employment, and is implemented in the European Union state-members, as well as in Island, Liechtenstein and Norway, in the context of the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement. Recently, it has expanded to the countries that have relative legal agreements, namely Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus and Turkey.

The action programme ERASMUS aims at improving the higher education’s quality and reinforcing its European dimension through encouraging the intergovernmental collaboration of higher education institutions, boosting the higher education student and academic staff mobility, enhancing the transparency of studies and the policies concerning the accreditation of higher education academic degrees in every European Union country.

>Department of Audio & Visual Arts realised the first students and researchers’ exchanges, in the context of ERASMUS programme, in collaboration with institutions such as Tomas Bata University in Zlín (Czech Republic), the Department of Animation and Audiovisual Arts and University of the Arts in Berlin (Germany), the Department of Music in Berlin (Germany). Since the fall semester of 2008, the mobility programme includes more researchers exchanges, in collaboration with the Aveiro University and Castell Branco Technical University, Higher School of Applied Arts (Portugal).

Moreover, contacts have been made concerning further exchanges for the fall semester of 2008 and the submission of proposals for research programmes in collaboration with other Higher Educational Institutions abroad is being prepared. At the same time, the Department is making all the necessary preparations to participate in the CULTURE programme, in tandem with six other Higher Education Institutions in Mediterranean European countries. This programme aims at combining elements of Mediterranean traditions in works of art with the use of new media.

Finally, the Department looks into collaborations with public and private sector entities, aiming to the development of international research programmes, which it considers as an equally important aspect of its activities.
